For example, the system can be programmed so it turns all the lighting to cleaner’s mode 15 minutes before the cleaners arrive at 5am. At 8:50am, just before the doors open, it can automatically turn on the audio-visual system and trigger the daytime lighting scene. Just before sunset, it can change the whole mood of the venue as the night trading scene is automatically triggered, dimming the lights at a slow pace to the new levels so patrons don’t even notice it happening. Once the night is over and it’s time to go home, simply press the “goodbye” button which will slowly dim the lighting off over a pre-set period allowing a safe exit path for staff, while turning off all the audio-visual systems, arming the alarm system and locking the doors. The building automation system will then be ready to start all over again the next day.

For large commercial areas such as pubs, building automation has the potential to save a venue thousands in power bills. Comfort level plays an important part in determining whether a patron wants to stay at a venue, so integrating in climate control to an automation system can ensure that the venue is always the perfect comfortable temperature, in the most energy efficient way. To do this, motion sensors can be installed to detect movement in an area which will trigger the system to read the temperature of an area. Scripting then works to adjust the AC, fans or heaters to get back to the ideal level. As well as electric windows, awnings and louvers – even installing weather stations to monitor the sunlight, wind and rain to adjust the windows, awnings or louvres accordingly. Importantly, security is often automated for venues – access control, alarms, intercoms and security cameras.
